History of the Run

The signature fundraiser for the Martinez Education Foundation began in 2003 as the Shell/MEF Run for Education. MEF established an incredible partnership with the Shell Martinez Refinery and the Run became our largest fundraiser.
The MEF Run for Education has steadily grown every year. Originally a 5K event, in 2012 a 10K course was added to the run. Although many people run, a large percent of registrants enjoy their stroll through downtown Martinez and walk the 5K. The 10K course extends out Carquinez Scenic Drive past historic cemeteries and along the river for some sweeping vistas.

The Kickoff
Each Spring, MEF kicks off the planning for our Fall event by organizing the Run T-Shirt Design Contest. We invite students from all MUSD schools to participate and submit designs for evaluation. MEF Board Members then gather to review the entries and select the winner.
The 2020 winner was a senior at Alhambra High School, and the 2019 winner was a 6th grader from the Martinez Junior High School. Not only does the chosen artist receive a monetary gift, but they also have the honor of starting the race. MEF also recognizes a runner-up from each of the other levels.
The Run for Education had been the signature community project of the Shell Martinez Refinery, until the refinery was sold in 2019. Shell provided financial support and many volunteers for the event. In addition to playing the lead role in underwriting, Shell Martinez Refinery matched the first $30,000 in corporate sponsorships. All proceeds from the race go to our foundation and benefit the MUSD schools. During its partnership with MEF, Shell Martinez Refinery matched funds totaling over $393,000. MEF is incredibly grateful for the seventeen-year partnership it had with Shell.
As with most things in life, change is inevitable – and we are excited to announce that not much should change with the new refinery ownership. The Martinez Refining Company recognizes the immense value the run provides to the entire community, and has generously agreed to continue with funding support!
